The challenge

Bring Turkey's rich biodiversity into the Natura 2000 network.

Turkey needed to reflect its high biodiversity in the EU’s Natura 2000 network using the best available methods.

That meant reconciling its own approach to site designation with EU practice, defining national criteria for Special Protection Areas, and building capacity across ministries, academia and nature conservation NGOs.

What was done

Oikon was part of a consortium with Human Dynamics, Eco Med, GAF AG and REC, on a 36-month EU-funded technical assistance contract. The project had three goals:

  1. 1 A technical structure to designate Natura 2000 sites in Turkey.
  2. 2 IT infrastructure that meets the requirements of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives.
  3. 3 More institutional capacity for Natura 2000 in Turkey.
