The challenge

Limit a wind farm's impact on wildlife, before construction and long after.

The project had to assess and mitigate the wind farm’s impact on birds, bats, endangered plants, forest ecosystems and noise, from baseline conditions through construction and several years of operation.

A decade later, the task was to check the ongoing risk of bat collisions and whether the protection measures were working.

What was done

Oikon has worked at Jelinak in three phases, from the first baseline surveys to monitoring during operation.

  1. 1 2006 - 2014: environmental impact assessment and protection measures for fauna, flora, forest ecosystems and noise; a one-year bird and bat baseline; biospeleological surveillance during construction; habitat mapping for two endangered plants, Orchis provincialis and Fritillaria messanensis ssp. gracilis; and mortality monitoring during the first 1.5 years of operation.
  2. 2 2020 - 2021: a bat monitoring campaign (fieldwork June - October 2020), in consortium with the Association for Bat Conservation "Tragus".
  3. 3 2023 - 2024: a third bat monitoring campaign (fieldwork July - October 2023) with EcoSymbia partner company Supernatural.

Methods used

Counting, listening and searching around every turbine.

  • Bird and bat baseline surveys
  • Biospeleological surveillance
  • Habitat mapping of endangered plants
  • Carcass searches within 70 m of each turbine
  • Searcher efficiency and carcass persistence trials
  • Continuous bat call recording
  • Thermal imaging cameras
  • Sonogram analysis (BatExplorer)
  • Microclimate analysis
  • Statistics in R and GIS

Outcome

Mitigation for bats, based on three monitoring campaigns.

  • Birds
  • Bats
  • Endangered plants

Protection measures and a monitoring programme were put in place before, during and after construction.

Both later bat campaigns assessed the significance of the recorded bat casualties and proposed mitigation measures in a final report.
